The film casts two Academy Award winners to tell the story of the Spanish bullfighting legend- Manolete (Adrien Brody) and his love affair with actress Lupe Sino (Penelope Cruz) in the 1940’s. Their love affair was a scandal due to Lupe Sino’s relation to the communist party and the death of Manolete. Many believe it was Manolete’s tempestuous relationship with Lupe Sino that led to his dramatic death at the age of 30.
A Matador’s Mistress premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2008 under the working title Manolete and has been praised for Brody and Cruz’s moving performances as well as the art direction and cinematography.
The movie finally made it’s way to the US in August. The reviews are mixed, however I always love a true story. Despite the long history and popularity of bullfighting in Barcelona, in 2010 it was banned in the Catalonia region. (Good news!)
Woody Allen is filming his next release, “Bop Decameron” in the heart of Rome. The $25-million movie is based on a collection of 100 medieval tales written by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio in the 14th century. The cast includes several Italian actors like Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful), as well as American actors Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Judy Davis, Ellen Page (Juno), Alec Baldwin and Allen himself.
“Every time has been like making declarations of love for certain places and projecting onto the screen my feelings for the places which have counted most in my life,” Allen said to an Italian newspaper La Repubblica. “I hope to do the same with Rome.”
Meanwhile, Allen’s Midnight in Paris is becoming the highest-grossing movie of his career.
